If I use your products, should I continue to use fertilizer or weed sprays?
Remember, any type of harsh chemicals applied to your soil can have a very negative impact on the micro and macro organisms working within your soil. If you truly want your soil to function at full potential and if you want your plants to be chemical free, avoid using any type of chemicals or man-made fertilizer. If you practice good organic gardening, rotating crops, composting and other natural methods of feeding your soil, mother nature will supply everything that your soil and plants need to thrive.

What about weeds?
In the natural world, there is a purpose and a role for all things to play. Weeds exist for several reasons. First and foremost, they are sent by nature to any loose or freshly cultivated soil as an agent to hold the soil and prevent erosion - to establish a root base to hold the soil until a more aggressive or well established crop can take over those duties. Second, the presence of certain weeds are a very definite indicator of the condition of your soil. For instance, compacted soil that is starving for oxygen will often invite “Curly Dock” and Wild Mustard”, among others. Oxygen deficient soil cannot effectively process decomposing crop residue and this can result in excessive amounts of certain nutrients in the soil. Dandelions are an example of mild oxygen deficiencies. The presence of Quackgrass could be an indicator of high levels of aluminum due to a lack of effective decomposition of plant residue.
On the other hand, some weeds, such as “Lambsquarters” and “Redroot pigweed”, can be an indicator of fertile soil, good soil structure and a well balanced decay system.
For the most part, implementing a program to stimulate good microbial activity in your soil will, over time, eliminate the appearance of most weeds due to the fact that your soil will readily absorb high levels of oxygen, it will more effectively process decaying plant residue and balance out the resulting nutrients, and it will also allow the escape of carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere.

If I need to avoid the use of chemicals, how can I control those pesky insects and worms that continue to damage my plants?
Again, in nature, there is a reason for everything. If you are plagued by an infestation of insects or worms, they are coming for a reason. In almost every case, insects attack plants that are genetically defective (imperfect) or out of balance. This is nature’s way of protecting the integrity of the plant species. Insects come to destroy the defective plants, before they can produce seed, and return their components back to the soil to nourish the next crop. Remember, the purpose of a plant is to produce the perfect seed! The best way to ensure that your plants are left intact is to ensure that the soil that nourishes them is providing well balanced, complete nutrition in sufficient quantity. Genetically complete, balanced, healthy plants will repel destructive insects!

How often should I apply ECS™ products if I want to maintain excellent microbial activity in my soil?
The answer to this question, of course, lies in the current condition of your soil. If you have been using heavy doses of fertilizer and other chemicals on your soil for a period of years, likely you are going to have more difficulty bringing it back to life and into balance. These cases generally require at least two growing seasons of steady application to get the soil cleaned up and functioning well again. Steady application usually means a treatment every two months during your growing season. If you have not been using chemicals and you just want to stimulate, support and multiply your organisms, then two applications over four months should really help things along. Our goal is not to create dependency, but to help your soil become an independent, self-sustaining enterprise. Over time, it will - if you learn to use good farming practices such as crop rotation, composting, and other proceudres that are in support of organic soil.
Important note: Your lawn and garden kit will contain some sodium thio-sulfate granules that we instruct you to use to de-chlorinate the water you use to mix with the products in your sprayer. This step is critical due to the fact that most city water systems add chlorine to their water. Chlorine is a chemical and will potentially kill the micro-organisms in the products before they reach your soil. You may wonder why that same chlorine in the water you sprinkle will not have the same effect. The answer comes in the realization that chlorine is a gas and 95% will evaporate as the sprinkler system exposes it to the outside air.
